Sustainable Construction Isn’t a Trend. It’s a Necessity. The world is changing. The climate is changing. Regulations are changing. But must foundations still look like they did 50 years ago? No – and they shouldn’t. Modern construction demands foundations that are not only structurally sound, but also climate-neutral, flexible, recoverable, and fast to install. Foundations that don’t require tons of concrete, hundreds of tonnes of rebar, and weeks of earthworks.
Foundations like the screw piles by Winkelmann Foundation Screw (WFS).
Sustainable construction is not just about triple-glazed windows and heat pumps. It’s about every phase of the project – from design, through foundations, to end-of-life disassembly.
And the foundation is, as we know, the first thing to be built… and the last that can be removed.
Traditional foundations mean:
Concrete (and high CO₂ emissions),
Excavation (i.e. land disruption),
Heavy machinery, noise, dust, traffic,
And zero chance of removal without demolition.
WFS foundation screw piles are the exact opposite:
No concrete,
No waste,
Minimal ecological impact,
Fully removable and recyclable or reusable.
You could say these are foundations for a circular economy. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves – no climate foundation charity yet. For now, we just build smarter.
Producing one tonne of cement results in approximately 900 kg of CO₂ emissions.
Now imagine a project built without a single gram of concrete – using only modular WFS screw piles, which are:
Hot-dip galvanized – for long-term durability,
Installed without excavation,
Free from thermal bridging and heat loss (unlike classic strip foundations),
Suitable even for non-cohesive, compacted, or loose soils.
And what about installation? WFS uses compact, transportable equipment – no bulldozers, no heavy haulers. It fits in a van. It can operate in Natura 2000 protected zones. You can screw foundations in… between trees.
What happens if, in 10 years, an investor wants to relocate a solar installation? Expand a carport? Or dismantle a production hall without damaging the land?
With traditional foundations: demolition, trucks, waste, cost.
With WFS screw piles: wrench, turn, done.
That’s why an increasing number of projects in photovoltaics, carports, timber frame construction, and modular buildings rely on the WFS system – not only for rapid deployment, but because deconstruction is already part of the plan.
Sustainable construction also means social responsibility: No noise, no dust, no torn-up plots, no closed roads.
WFS screw foundations:
Can be installed without interrupting operations (as in Łódź, Poland),
Are used in urban parks, schools, and maneuvering yards,
Do not damage underground utilities,
Allow you to build with a “light footprint” – both literally and environmentally.
WFS is not a startup in a garage – it’s a certified system, compliant with:
EN 1090,
EA-Pfähle,
ISO 22477,
Manufactured from S235 structural steel,
Protected by hot-dip galvanization.
This is a foundation that:
Carries the load,
But also relieves the planet – in both senses of the word.
WFS screw foundations perfectly align with the goals of sustainable construction – in Poland and in international markets:
CO₂ emissions reduction,
Optimized lifecycle performance,
Support for renewable energy systems,
Easy expansion, adaptation, relocation,
Minimal environmental impact.
Sustainable building doesn’t end on the roof. It starts in the ground – or more precisely, in how you enter it.
WFS doesn’t claim it will save the planet. But it lets you build like the planet matters.
And that’s already something.
